What is an ELSA?
An ELSA is an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. ELSAs are trained and supervised by educational psychologists. Mrs Julie Ballinger is the ELSA for Innsworth Junior School. The ELSA intervention is part of our holistic approach to meeting the needs of our pupils at all levels. We consider that being emotionally supported will help a child reach their potential educationally by reducing any barriers to learning. We know that a happier child will be more ready and open to learn.ELSAs help children to understand their emotions, respect the feelings of others around them and thrive in our school environment. Much of our ELSA work is carried out on a bespoke individual basis but sometimes it is more appropriate to work in small groups. The ELSA sessions are fun. How does ELSA work?
Children can be referred for ELSA support either by parent request, the school SENCo, senior leaders or class teacher. The need is discussed with the referrer and the ELSA will plan for the appropriate support. This may include developing new skills and coping strategies. The sessions will normally last 6 weeks and then a review is conducted to see whether the support needs to be continued. An ELSA will support and encourage – not ‘fix’.
The ELSA’s aim is to establish a warm and respectful relationship with a pupil and provide a reflective space where they can openly share their thoughts and feelings.
