Reading

At Innsworth Junior School, we recognise the importance of learning to read and its impact on a child’s future learning. We expect all children to develop and secure the variety of skills needed to be a fluent reader and our aim is that all children will find books that they enjoy reading for pleasure.

All our children take part in reading activities daily, this may be in class taking part in Whole Class Reading sessions or in small groups taking part in phonics sessions. In addition to this, children have opportunities within school to read alongside adults on a 1:1 basis. Each class also has allocated time everyday to sit down and enjoy a story. Staff read this story so that children hear good quality, expressive, fluent reading daily.

Whole Class Reading

Whole class reading is where the core reading teaching happens for the majority of children. There are 2 distinct parts to whole class reading at our school. Children will have 2 sessions a week that are based on their class novel. They will discuss the author’s intent and make predictions based on what has already been read. The children will then have 3 sessions based on one text. They will spend one session becoming familiar with the text by reading it several times and answering some retrieval questions. They will then have a session where they discuss inferences, make summaries and give explanations. The final session will be an independent session where they answer a variety of question types to demonstrate their understanding of the text.

Phonic Provision

We use RWI as our phonics scheme for the children who need to develop their phonic knowledge. This allows all staff who teach it to follow a structure, giving the children the best possible chance of success. We organise this in small and focused groups allowing us to meet the needs of individual children. We monitor and assess the children regularly to move them along the scheme as needed.  This is also supported with reading books linked to the sounds the children have learnt so they can practise and reinforce their knowledge and skills for blending to read.

Reading books

We know that Reading requires a range of skills which weave together to make a successful reader. We offer children a range of reading books to take home which will support the acquisition of skills appropriate to their stage of reading. This process is regularly assessed to ensure progress and appropriate provision for each child.  Children are encouraged to read regularly at home to practise the skills they have been taught in school and to develop a love for reading and to read for pleasure.
