Design Technology

At Innsworth Schools’ Partnership we believe that Design and Technology is crucial in allowing children to develop practical skills for a sustainable future. Our curriculum provides a framework in which children are able to develop their cooking, sewing and engineering skills over time and think critically about design and how good design can improve the world around them.

Our aim is for our children to be confident in talking about, preparing and cooking simple dishes from around the world, reflecting the multi-national character of our school community. We also teach basic sewing techniques so that they will have the skills to be able to mend, recycle and embellish clothes and other fabric articles in the future. In our engineering curriculum, we encourage the children to experiment with a range of mechanisms, materials and components and carry out practical tasks with increasing accuracy through selecting and using a wider range of tools and equipment as they progress through the schools.

Design Technology has the added benefit of allowing children to develop resourcefulness, resilience and problem solving skills. Children are also able to apply skills learned in other disciplines (such as maths, science and art) in a practical way and are encouraged to work constructively with others to analyse and evaluate, make mistakes, share them and learn from them.
