Au Revoir, Mrs Kelly

As many of you already know, Mrs Kelly has been away from school since May, with a ruptured achillies. The good news is that she is making a slow but steady recovery. The not so good news is that Mrs Kelly has decided that now is the time for her to move on in her career. Whilst this is an exciting development for Mrs Kelly, we know that she has been a stalwart in the promotion of physical activity for young children at Innsworth Junior School. Her passion has been boundless and many of our former pupils owe their sporting achievements to Mrs Kelly's drive to offer access to so many sporting opportunties.

Besides recognising Mrs Kelly's qualities in the world of sport, we must also recognise her many qualities in the classroom. She started at Innsworth Junior School in June 1992 and has worked through a variety of teaching positions. Having started as a full-time teacher with a class commitment, part-time work ensured she had time to spend with her two children. Mrs Kelly's journey continued until she took over the role of PPA teacher - this is where she covered other teachers' classes whilst they had their release time.

Mrs Kelly will be greatly missed and many of our former pupils will shed a tear as news of her departure becomes known.

Mrs Kelly, we wish you well and hope your new venture brings success. Thank you for all that you have done for us over the last nineteen years.

Mrs Kelly's replacement Year 4 Job-share with Mr Jones and PPA cover for all teachers

We are currently looking for a teacher who is eminently suited to fulfil Mrs Kelly's shoes. Potential candidates will be looking around our school until the closing date on Wednesday 5th October. As we have done in the past, we will be using a Children's Panel as an integral part of our interview procedure. We value children's input as they often give us an insight, which we may have overlooked.

Class 3 parents will be informed as soon as we have appointed the new teacher.

School Development

We are determined to raise standards and improve children's progress in English, particularly in writing. This is our priority for school development in this academic year. We need your support if we are going to succeed with this aspect of learning. How can you do this? There is a simple formula:

  • Listen to your child read regularly throughout the week.
  • Ask questions about the text which develops a greater understanding.
  • Make sure your child has his/her reading book in his/her bag for school next morning.
  • Ensure your child has a quiet space to complete homework tasks.
  • Promote neatness and completion of written tasks before homework comes back into school.
  • Explore new vocabulary when your child hears a word which is new to him/her.

Good speaking and listening skills are important in the development of writing skills as they allow ideas to be explored.
We are always here if you need assistance in ways you can help your child. The Curriculum Evening will certainly be a good start.

Curriculum Evening: Thursday 10th November (Note new date.)

We have a Curriculum Evening coming up on Thursday 10th November. This is an evening for all parents. Last term many parents replied to our newsletter that they wanted a better knowledge of how Maths and Literacy is taught in school. We listened to what you had to say and decided that now is a good time to address this. Please come along and listen to the co-ordinators explain how the subjects are taught in school and how you could support your child's learning at home. We originally hoped to have someone from the Health Service at this evening but the School Nurse has been told that this is outside of her remit. At the time of writing this newsletter, I am still hopeful that we will find someone who could help us out.

Fantasy Football

For the last four years, we have participated in online Fantasy Football. I knew nothing about football until I signed up for this! I'm now avidly watching the news on Saturday evenings to find out whether my footballers have been on the winning teams. Even my husband is impressed! Letters went out last week - all we now need is your £2.00 fee. Mrs Wilmot is around to help new parents who are just bewildered by what they have to do. I would really encourage parents and children to join in, as it encourages good discussion during the season. Is player ?? worth keeping in the team? Should we replace him with player ??, who has scored so many times in the last few games? £2.00 is a small amount for the fun you will have over the next six months. Go for it!

Stranger Danger

Please would you give your child/children a timely reminder about 'Danger Stranger'. It is some time since we last received an alert about a child being approached by a stranger but we know we cannot be complacent. Please find time to sit down and discuss how your child should respond if they find themselves in a difficult situation.

School Photographs

The school photographer will be in school this Wednesday, 28th September. All children will have an individual photograph taken as well as one with a brother or sister, if they have one in school. Parents will receive a proof photograph, together with an order form. If you would like a family group portrait, the photographer will be in school from 8 a.m. Mrs Hamblett recommends these for the perfect Christmas present!

Parent Governor Vacancy

We have a vacancy for a Parent Governor. A letter should be accompanying this newsletter today. Please read it and decide whether you have the time and the interest to pursue this venture. It really is very rewarding.

Operation Christmas Child

We have supported this initiative for the last five years. The children have an assembly on Thursday 6th October to hear all about this project and take home a leaflet. Please take time to read this leaflet, before making a decision. It is such a worthwhile project because it benefits the giver almost as much as the recipient. If we all start making a conscious effort to have a box ready for the beginning of Term 2, it will not push the finances to the extreme. However much we are feeling the financial pinch, the boxes are going to children who have so much less and live in less salubrious surroundings. Please help us to make this a year to remember.

Residential Visit 2012

I'm looking forward to next year's visit already! Have you returned your child's reply slip?

Swimming this term - Years 3 and 4

Thank you to the parents who are volunteering to give up their Friday afternoons to make swimming happen. As Friday 21st October is an Inset training day for staff only, there will be a swimming session on Friday 9th December as a replacement.

J4 for Year 6 Pupils - Saturday October 8th

Good luck to all the children who are taking the Grammar school test in two weeks time. After all the extra practice that has gone in, they all deserve to succeed.

Named Clothing

Oh Dear! We are still having clothing going missing every day of the week. It is so important that you name all the clothes which your child wears to school. Names written on labels in pen do wear off because of friction between shirt and sweater. The only safe bet is to buy the woven name tapes: they are not expensive. We can get leaflets if you ask us about them.

Even with woven name tapes, articles still go missing as children can take the wrong sweater home. However, this normally results in success when the parent notices the name in the garment as it is washed.

TOP

PE Lessons

Children are still missing PE lessons because their kit is at home. As parents, you are in charge and need to make sure the kit comes into school on a Monday and is taken home on a Friday. Many thanks.

TOP

Lateness

Thank you to all the parents who make sure that their child is in the playground by 8.50 a.m. As we do have a few persistent late arrivals, I do need to inform you that regular lateness could result in us issuing you with a penalty notice. Please do not put us in this position. If lateness becomes acceptable to your child now, it will still be acceptable when they start their first job. Habits are learnt!

"Meet and Greet" Friday 14th October

We would like to invite all our new parents across the school to a 'Meet and Greet' hour on Friday 14th October at 6.00 p.m. - 7.00 p.m. This hour will precede the Bingo Evening which the Friends are setting up for everyone's enjoyment. New parents, please come along, enjoy a glass of wine [plus nibbles] and become acquainted with other new parents and governors of the school. A letter will follow shortly regarding both these events.

TOP

Bicycles

If your child is cycling to school, they must have a helmet. This is a safety issue and is non-negotiable. As the school gates are kept locked during the day, it is not so important for the children to have a bike lock.

Mrs Samson

Mrs Samson is managing extremely well so her plans to remain in school until the end of this term [October 21st] remain on track. Miss West, who came to our aid when Mrs Kelly was unable to return to school, will take over in Class 1 when we start Term 2 on Monday 31st October.

Water Bottles

Please ensure that your child has their water bottle in school every day as it is forecast that the weather will be very hot and sunny this week and possibly into next.
