Welcome back to Term 2

We are pleased to welcome all our learners and parents back to school for what will invariably be a very busy term: past experience tells us that this will be the case! Hopefully everyone enjoyed their week's break and is raring to go as we start to plan ahead for our Christmas activities. There are many things happening in the coming weeks so please make sure you put the important dates on your family calendar. (See diary.)

New staff recently appointed

We are delighted to welcome Miss Amanda Gabriel-Clarke, who will be job-sharing with Mr Jones in Class 3. Besides teaching Class 3 on Mondays and Tuesdays, Miss Gabriel-Clarke will be covering other teachers during the week so she will be teaching all children across the school.

Mrs Joanne Ridley has been appointed [from 8th November] as a Teaching Assistant to support our pupils with English as an additional language [EAL].

Miss Lauren Naulls, a Teaching Assistant, has been appointed to support a Year 6 pupil for 10 hours each week.

We are delighted to welcome all three new staff members to Innsworth Junior and know that together we can deliver a quality education to all of our learners.

A big 'Thank You' goes to the four Year 6 school reps, Harry, Jamie, Rosie and Katie, together with Zorzet [Year 5] and Sveva [Year 3] who were the Children's Panel in the interview process. They did a fantastic job for us and impressed all the adults with their insight as they reported back to the main interviewing panel. Well done to you all.

Baby News!!!!

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Samson has had a baby boy! Jasper Zeal Samson arrived on Saturday evening weighing in at 7lbs 10oz. Both mother and baby are doing well and we send them all our congratulations.
Mrs Samson did a sterling job in staying with us until the end of Term 1, especially as she only had a week in which to 'put her feet up!' Miss West, who is well known to all our pupils, will be covering Mrs Samson's maternity leave.
Whilst our staffing structure has changed considerably in the course of a few weeks, we are confident that we have the right people in place to support all learners in their progress throughout this academic year.

Consultation Evening

Thank you to all the parents who came along to the October Consultation Evenings. Please accept our apologies if you were kept waiting; hopefully you thought it was worth the wait when you finally met up with the class or Maths teacher. Attendance to see the class teacher was at a low of 79% so those parents who did not come along will be receiving letters this week, inviting you to make a further appointment. Please take the opportunity to do so as it is vital that home and school are working together to ensure maximum progress is made.
Below are the individual attendances for seeing the class teachers:

Classes Attendance as a percentage:
Class 1 76%
Class 2 78%
Class 3 77%
Class 4 79%
Class 5 84%
Top honours go to Class 5 parents!

Children's Targets

In order for you to support your child's progress, all teachers will be making sure that children's targets in Reading, Writing and Maths will be copied into either the red Reading Record or the homework books [by the end of this week]. Please take time to discuss these with your child as we are committed to all children making the best possible progress during the year.

Update from 'The Friends'

The Friends of Innsworth would like to thank all parents and supporters at the recent Bingo Evening and cake stall events.
We raised an amazing £293 and £132 respectively, which has gone a long way to paying the £500 for the recent Life Bus visit for the benefit of every child in school.

Our next fundraising event is our Family Xmas Disco on Friday 9th December from 6.30 pm. All family members are welcome and there will be a licenced bar for adults. Watch this space for a further update, but put the date in your diary now so you don't miss out!
Many thanks, 'The Friends'.

SATs Evening this week - Wednesday 2nd November 2011 at 6.30 pm

If you are a parent of a Year 6 pupil (or indeed Year 5 pupil), you need to come along and listen to our subject leaders as they lead you through the expectations for our Year 6 pupils. Mrs Pendlebury will be leading on Literacy and Miss Schofield on Maths.
Past papers will be used to show you what your child will be facing next May. Parents in the past have expressed their shock at seeing what their children are expected to know and understand. Your child needs your support, so this evening is for you. Please send the slip back at the end of the original newsletter. Children are welcome to attend. As it was on the calendar sent to you earlier in the term, we are hoping for full attendance!

Parent Council Meeting: Tuesday 8th November from 6 00 - 7.00 p.m.

We really need our parents to engage in school matters and setting up a Parent Council seems an obvious way of doing this. Parents have a vital role to play in school and we want to be working with you. We don't want to be known as a school with hard to reach parents! Please come along.
A free crèche will be provided during the meeting for children. If you would like to take advantage of this facility please complete the reply slip at the end of the original newsletter.

Headlice / Nits!

Oh dear! I spoke too soon in my last newsletter. Headlice/nits are around again, so we have to be vigilant in our Sunday night checks. Please keep us informed as we will do everything we can to keep on top of this. Checking and then being proactive if you find something 'lurking', is the best we can all do. We do not reveal who has reported an outbreak; the most important aspect is to make sure every parent is aware and is checking!

Zumba Fitness - Innsworth Community Hall

This is a wonderful opportunity for all parents who do not work and do not have younger children at home.
Zumba Fitness Classes are taking place at Innsworth Community Hall on Wednesdays. The next session is due to take place this Wednesday [2nd November] from 10 - 11 a.m. at a cost of £5. If I thought Mrs Hamblett wouldn't miss me, I would be at the front of the queue. Zumba classes are this year's 'must go to' fitness sessions.

Celebrating Bonfire Night - Firework Display

Many of our ARRC parents may not know about November 5th. This is when the whole country celebrates a plot to blow up parliament [many years ago!]. We are selling tickets on behalf of Churchdown Round Table for a community firework display on Friday 4th November at Churchdown Park, Parton Road. Tickets bought in advance cost:
Children £2.00 [£3.00 on the night]
Adults £3.00 [£4.00 on the night]
If you wish to purchase advance tickets, please come along to the school office.
The children had an assembly this afternoon from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service about safety on Bonfire Night.

Tonight 31st October

For parents who are not aware of our customs, you may find that tonight you have a few 'Trick or Treaters' coming to your door. Please do not be alarmed by these visitors. This is an American custom which we have gradually taken on board. If you live on an estate, children may knock at your door and ask 'Trick or Treat'? Generally most people have a small supply of sweets to give out to these callers so that they go away happy. The other custom we have is to carve pumpkins and place them on the window ledges for the evening of the 31st. The Internet is a good source for checking on UK customs.

Info for new parents - Christmas Parties

The class Christmas parties will be taking place in the afternoon of Thursday 15th December. Children do not need to bring in a packed lunch on this day, as they will be eating their party food instead. Teachers will discuss with their individual classes about planning the party food they need to bring in. Fruit for breaktime will still be needed.
As party clothes may be worn to school in the morning, the children will not need school uniform for the last two days of term.

Info for new parents - School website

Just a reminder that you can always check dates and other pieces of information on the school website: (See diary.)

Christmas Productions

Monday 12th December (Years 3/4) 1.30 & 6.30 pm
Tuesday 13th December (Years 5/6) 1.30 & 6.30 pm
This year there will only be one afternoon and one evening production for each of the school productions. Children cannot opt out of their evening production so it is vital that parents keep this date clear.
If your child already has a prior engagement, you must let the teacher know as everyone has a part to play, whether it is acting or singing. This is a whole group event.

School Choir - Cathedral

As we have done for the past two years, the school choir will be singing in Gloucester Cathedral on the evening of Wednesday 7th December in aid of Muscular Dystrophy. Only two schools are invited to take part [the other being The Cotswold School, Secondary] so our children are in front of the congregation for the whole time. Miss Schofield will let you know about how to book tickets in the coming weeks. Another date to keep free on the family calendar.

TOP

Year 3 and 4 Parents

Thank you to all the parents who came into school a few weeks ago to listen to their child read their story aloud. We are trying to give the children a real audience for their writing as this increases the children's engagement in their learning. Your participation was important and greatly appreciated by the children and the staff.

The Poppy Appeal

Poppies are now on sale every day in school in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. There is no set price as it is up to the individual to make a suitable donation.

TOP

Parent Governor Vacancy

We have a Parent Governor vacancy on our Governing Body. If you are interested in taking an active role in the development of Innsworth Junior, we would be delighted to hear from you. Our governors are very active in school and provide the challenge and support in order for us to provide the best possible education for all children. If you wish to be part of this extremely hard working group, please contact the school office for more details.

Christmas Shoe Boxes

To date we have only received three Christmas boxes, which is rather disappointing when the initial response was so positive. Please could I ask you all to take a moment to think about how much these shoe boxes mean to the children who receive them. The present financial climate is hitting everyone hard but the outlay for a shoe box does not have to be extreme. Mrs Hamblett has spare leaflets if you need ideas of what to include. One idea could be for several families to 'club' together to fill a shoe box. A second idea would be for families to donate a few items [plus a contribution towards the £2.50 cost]. We would need a few parents to send in some boxes wrapped in Christmas paper and then a few volunteers to fill the boxes. If you would like to contribute to this, please return the slip at the bottom of this newsletter.
We do need at least 50 boxes for them to be collected. Thank you.

TOP

Swimming

Swimming will be taking place this Friday, 4th November. However, there will be no swimming on the 11th November due to lighting repairs at GL1. This means that swimming will continue up to and including Friday 16th December [last day of term].

TOP

Breaktime Snacks

Can you please ensure that your child only brings fruit, vegetable sticks or cheese for their mid-morning snack. Sugary cereal bars or yoghurts should be kept to eat with their lunch. Many thanks.
