It is already the middle of January but for those parents we have not seen in this new term, Happy New Year to you. I hope that 2012 will be a good one for us all! This year's resolution is to make progress happen for everyone and we will be relentless in our pursuit of this goal. You will recognise that this is the second time the word relentless has been used in our communication with you: the first time was in the letter about reading last Friday. The working world, which awaits our pupils, is an ever-changing one, so we all have a duty to make sure that our children are equipped to deal with it. Whilst we may appear to be very demanding, it is with the very best of intentions. Wednesdays' Homework Catch up Sessions Two children
were in the first session and we have a few candidates for today's
session. One child has already told us that she will not be coming
again! We want children to realise that completing homework at home
is the better option. It is important that children develop a good
homework routine, as this will stand them in good stead for the secondary
system. Please encourage your children to look at the homework as
soon as they get it: this will give them time to ask the teacher for
further explanation, should it be needed. The Order of Our School Day Has Changed Some of you may already know about the way we have changed our school day. After registration, children now go into their Guided Reading groups [Class 1, 2 and 3 are mixed across the three classes] for 30 minutes. After this, assembly takes place for 15 minutes and is followed by the daily Maths lesson. This now means that break is from 10.50 to 11.05 a.m. After break, the children are back in their classes having either Literacy or one of the other subject lessons. The reason for the change was simply to split Guided Reading from Literacy as many of the younger children found it difficult to concentrate for such a long spell. I have to say that I really like our new school day and find that the morning just flies! I hope that everyone agrees with me! Friends of Innsworth Junior School Have you received any unwanted Christmas gifts this year? If so, how about donating them to the Friends to use as prizes at the forthcoming Bingo Evening or other fundraising events in the year. Here are a few dates for your diary: Family Prize
Bingo Night - Friday 2nd March 2012 6.30 - eyes down for 7.00
pm We are very fortunate that we have a very proactive group in our 'Friends'. This group give up their valuable time to meet regularly and as a school, we benefit from this. Please try to come along to the evenings, which they arrange throughout the year. Soap for Rianyakwara Primary School We are still collecting soap for our Kenyan School. If you did not contribute soap at the end of last term, perhaps you would like to this term. The box will remain open in the office until the 10th February. Please do not book a family holiday for the week beginning 13th May, as this is SATs [Statutory Assessment Tests] week for Year 6. School will not authorise a leave of absence. Any holiday in term time will cause a gap in your child's education. Whilst this may not affect too greatly on some pupils, the impact could be much greater on others, especially if they generally have support in class. We recognise that some family holidays are unavoidable due to a parent's employment but it should not be an easy option for the majority. Having looked at holidays for the February half term, I can see how inflated the prices are, compared to a school week either side of a school holiday. Please think long and hard before making your choice. Out target
for this year's attendance is 96%. Currently attendance stands at
95.9%. I overheard a parent reporting to Mrs Hamblett that the family had seen a return of the dreaded nits. My heart sank at hearing this, as it is the blight of so many families: the expense, the time, often the embarrassment and the inconvenience. Please carry out the Sunday Night Check, as this is the only way of gaining some control over these irritating creatures. Having set
up the Innsworth Junior School Parent Council, it is important that
you the parents take ownership of it. We consider this to be a significant
part of our school development as it gives you a voice on school matters,
which impact on your children. The next meeting is scheduled for:
Tuesday 7th February at 6.00 p.m. (Note change of time.) By now, you should have received your child's curriculum plan, the school diary of events for Terms 3 and 4 and the new updated targets. Please ask your child about his/her targets for reading, writing and Maths. Miss Schofield has recently changed the whole school Maths targets so that every pupil is climbing the same ladder towards success. There are four stages, which are based on tables and associated work. Joint Core Strategy Consultation - we have been asked to include this in our newsletter The Joint
Core Strategy is a project across Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury
which will provide housing and employment land across the area for
the next 20 years from 2011-2031. This event provides the chance for residents living in Gloucester [GL1, 2, 3 and 4] to discover their city by offering various special offers and savings over the course of the weekend which is due to be held on the 11th and 12th February. In order to take part you simply need to complete a form, which will be enclosed in a Residents Weekend leaflet [available mid-January] and take this to Gloucester Tourist Information Centre along with proof of address. Look up www.thecityofgloucester.co.uk/residents to see all the offers listed. It must be worth a look! On behalf of all the staff, I would like to thank you for the cards and presents that came our way before we broke up for the Christmas holidays. Your generosity is much appreciated. I do love reading the comments, which many children include in the cards. Film Club is ready to resume on Tuesdays from next week (24th January). We have several films ready for our viewing public! Some of the films have come with a PG rating so I will check that they are suitable. Please send the attached slip On the original newsletter here, back to school if you want your child to participate in this club. Our team of teaching assistants has been increased by one Mrs Ballinger will be with us for the rest of this academic year. We are all delighted to see her back in school. We are very grateful to the parents who have offered their services to help in the classrooms each week. Your support is invaluable.
